The placement of warehouse shelves requires comprehensive consideration of
multiple factors. Here are some key points for placement:
1、 Arrange according to the warehouse layout
Warehouse shape
If it is a rectangular warehouse, you can choose to place shelves parallel
along the long side direction, which can maximize the use of the warehouse's
length, increase the number of shelves arranged, and improve storage
capacity.
For a square warehouse, shelves can be arranged in a criss crossing manner,
or shelves containing highfrequency goods can be placed near the entrance and
exit based on the frequency of goods entering and leaving the warehouse.
Entrance and exit locations
The placement of shelves should ensure smooth passage for goods entering
and exiting the warehouse. Usually, the main passage is set in the center of the
warehouse, with a width of 23 meters, to facilitate the passage of forklifts and
other handling equipment.
The width of the secondary channel branching out from the main channel can
be around 11.5 meters, and the secondary channel connects various shelf areas.
There should be sufficient operating space between the shelves and the aisle,
usually 0.51 meter, for the handling and loading/unloading of goods.
2、 Arrange according to the characteristics of the goods
Types of goods
Place goods of the same type or similar items in the same shelf area for
easier management and retrieval of goods. For example, placing food products on
shelves in one area and electronic products in another area.
For goods that are prone to mutual influence, such as volatile chemicals
and moisture sensitive items, they should be placed separately to avoid mutual
contamination or damage.
Weight and size of goods
Heavier goods should be placed at the bottom of the shelves to ensure their
stability. For example, components of large mechanical equipment can be placed
at the bottom of heavyduty shelves.
Goods with larger sizes should choose appropriate shelf specifications
based on their shape and size to avoid space waste caused by unsuitable shelf
sizes.
3、 Consider storage efficiency placement
Utilize vertical space
Try to increase the height of the shelves as much as possible and make full
use of the vertical space in the warehouse. But it should be noted that the
height of the shelves cannot exceed the effective height of the warehouse, and
the maximum lifting height of forklifts and other handling equipment should also
be considered.
High rise shelves can be paired with attic shelves, which can utilize the
space at the top of the shelves for secondary storage, further improving storage
efficiency.
Goods turnover rate
Placing goods with high turnover rates on shelves near the entrance and
main aisle can reduce the distance and time required for cargo handling and
improve warehouse efficiency.
Goods with low turnover can be placed deeper in the warehouse or on
highrise shelves.
