In the intelligent shelf system, users use RFID readers installed on specially designed shelves to obtain information about goods placed on the shelves, and on this basis, carry out application level work such as logistics tracking and passenger flow analysis. Moreover, compared to traditional non electronic tags that use EAN/UCC encoding rules, RFID tags can convey rich information through the tag itself, including the manufacturer of the product, shelf life, and various on-demand customized attributes that can be directly read, without the need to manage complex data in business systems. This deployment plan is also similar in form to traditional store layouts, and can be transformed from current facilities to a certain extent, making it the most widely chosen solution for RFID applications in the early stages. Many large retail enterprises, including Metro AG, have adopted various derivative schemes to manage their stores. However, we must also see the limitations of this approach: firstly, it is an expensive investment plan. Deploying RFID readers on a large scale will inevitably bring significant pressure on hardware costs. Secondly, due to the use of passive RFID tags with small reading distances in this scheme, it is necessary to use multiple readers to cover the same shelf in some cases to ensure the accuracy of data collection, which will inevitably lead to a certain degree of resource waste.

In order to overcome the shortcomings of early intelligent shelves, RFID suppliers attempt to provide advanced solutions in various parts of the RFID system. One idea is to use proactive RFID tags. The main difference between active and passive tags is that they use a built-in battery as energy source, actively transmitting RF signals, and can be read by readers with low density and low sensitivity. At the same time, the reliability of active tags is also higher than that of passive tags. Just because the cost of active tags is high, their lifespan is affected by batteries, and their readers are also expensive, they cannot be widely used in sales and sales. But with the cost reduction brought about by mass production and its inherent advantage of supporting the 802.11 standard, proactive labeling will occupy a place in the retail industry. According to the latest data, the number of users and suppliers using active RFID tags has completely doubled in the past year, and according to industry forecasts, this speed will accelerate in the coming years.
